Washington, DC, June 6, 2022 (Updated June 16) - What does freedom taste like during Juneteenth? Find out at the Sisterhood Supper which returns on June 18th to honor local women leaders who are empowering their families and communities one meal at a time in Washington, D.C. Enjoy the Juneteenth Menu catered by Ward 8 own's Chef Aria and Plum Good with Ghanaian styled Chicken, Jollof rice, Plantains, Kale salad, Watermelon salad, Black-eyed pea salad, Hibiscus, ginger lemonade, and more! Enjoy the beats by DC own's DJ One Luv and Malcolm X Drummers.
With the theme of “Liberating Ourselves from Farm to Fork,” the community event is hosted by Women Advancing Nutrition, Dietetics and Agriculture (WANDA), a DC-based nonprofit that advocates and educates communities around food access and nutrition equity. The Sisterhood Supper takes place at the Well located at Oxon Run Park, 300 Valley Avenue S.E. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 18th. The public can register for free at iamwanda.org/sisterhoodsupper to attend, volunteer, or support the event.
This celebratory event kicks off the inaugural WANDA Week with an open house, film discussion, listening sessions, Instagram Live, community programs, and an online survey to create a report for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. “This event honors the contributions and amplifies the voices of Black women and girls in the food system while supporting the WANDA’s Food Shero Freedom Fund to create fellowships and scholarships in agriculture, nutrition, and dietetics to create a more inclusive food system,” says Tambra Stevenson, MPH, WANDA’s founder and CEO.
“We are excited to bring Sisterhood Supper back this year to celebrate the everyday women who are making a difference in our community through the power of food. During this pandemic, women worked on the frontline of our homes, health care, and food systems from hospitals to grocery stores. Now, with the current impact of inflation on food prices, women must continue to share resources and cooking practices to sustain our families, especially during times of economic uncertainty,” ANC Commissioner Jamila White.
In advocating for better food policies, there will also be an open mic to share personal food stories and honor African diasporan food traditions along with outdoor activities and interactive exhibits. Featuring DJ ONE Luv and a Juneteenth menu reflecting our African diasporan foodways, attendees are encouraged to wear African prints and bring their family recipes, food stories, and photos of women from their families to include in the Sisterhood Community Cookbook project. The Sisterhood Supper is supported by community and business partners such as the Bainum Family Foundation, Giant Food, Petal Share, Anacostia Coordinating Council, Far Southeast Family Strengthening & Collaborative, and Whole30®, is a structured protocol designed to reset your health, habits, and relationship with food.
