WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the heart of the holiday season, as winter chills and societal disconnection grow, Women Advancing Nutrition, Dietetics, and Agriculture (WANDA) invites the community to gather in celebration of Kwanzaa at its Sisterhood Supper: Kwanzaa Celebration on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Doors open at 3:30 PM at the Capital Turnaround (700 M St SE, Washington, D.C.).
This inaugural event blends culture, cuisine, and connection with a mission to combat loneliness—an issue highlighted in the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2024 Project Gather report. Washington, D.C., leads the nation in this "silent epidemic," making this gathering more vital than ever.
Since 2017, WANDA has hosted Sisterhood Suppers across the U.S. and Africa, fostering healing and community through food, critical conversations, and cultural celebration. “Community truly is our medicine, and WANDA is thrilled to celebrate Kwanzaa with the community,” says Tambra Raye Stevenson, Founder and CEO of WANDA.
The evening will feature:
Cultural Experiences: A holiday-themed cooking demonstration, led by local chef Tricey DC, and cultural nutrition games to deepen knowledge of African and African-American foodways.
A Soulful Feast: Enjoy a nutritious, culturally inspired catered meal to nourish the body and soul.
Inspiring Performances: Live holiday entertainment by Troy Prestwood and DJ One Luv.
Holiday Marketplace: Explore the Kwanzaa Vendor Marketplace, curated by Carmichael Community Connections, showcasing local Black-owned businesses offering wellness, cultural, and health-focused goods.
In true Kwanzaa spirit, the event will also honor partners who embody the principles of unity, purpose, and cooperative economics, including UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of DC, the Jane Bancroft Robinson Foundation, the Ward 8 Health Council, and the Vitamix Foundation.
Attendees will have the chance to win Vitamix blenders as part of the event’s giveaways, thanks to a generous contribution from Vitamix.“Vitamix’s partnership with WANDA for the Sisterhood Supper underscores our commitment to empowering communities through food,” says Natalie A. Haynes, Executive Director of the Vitamix Foundation.
“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to fostering a culture of health through community and food. By honoring the rich traditions and resilience of Black women, we celebrate the power of unity, wellness, and purpose,” says Rachael Han, Executive Director of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of DC.
Event Emcee: Karen Maria Alston, founder of Spectrum Circle, a celebrated advocate for women and wellness, will guide the evening’s festivities.
