How Little WANDA Is Fighting Hunger with Hip Hop and Heart

"What if our next hero wore an apron that transforms into a cape?"

Not all heroes fly. Some flip collards in cast iron skillets and drop bars about beets and ballots. Meet Little WANDA—a 5-year-old food shero with the voice of a culinary griot and the power of a people behind her. This pint-sized food freedom fighter is leading a movement from the kitchen to the Capitol, and she's just getting started.

On this Fourth of July—while many celebrate independence—Little WANDA reminds us that true freedom starts with food justice.

🎬 PREMIERE: Little WANDA Fights Hunger to Save SNAP and WIC

In her newest animated music video, Little WANDA flips the script on food injustice, using beats and bold bars to spotlight the power of federal nutrition programs like SNAP and WIC. With rhymes like:

“SNAP got our back, and so does WIC! Helpin’ babies grow strong and mamas not sick!”

She turns policy into poetry—and makes sure the youngest voices are heard.

🧒🏾 Who Is Little WANDA?

She’s not your average 5-year-old. She’s got ancestral wisdom in her walk, power in her play, and purpose in her plate. Inspired by real stories of mothers, grandmothers, and aunties feeding families against all odds, Little WANDA was created to be a voice for the veggies and the voiceless.

She's not asking for charity. She’s demanding dignity. And she’s showing the world that food is medicine—and a human right.

🥣 Why SNAP and WIC Still Matter

Millions of families in the U.S. rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) to keep food on the table and nutrition in their children’s lives. These programs are proven lifelines:

  • SNAP helps over 40 million people every month buy groceries.

  • WIC supports more than 6 million moms and children, improving birth outcomes, nutrition education, and long-term health.

  • Studies show WIC reduces infant mortality and improves cognitive development—especially in underserved communities.

These are not just programs. They are pillars of maternal and child health, economic stability, and community wellness.

🧠 Little WANDA Believes: Food Is Freedom

With rising food prices, health disparities, and gaps in access, nutrition security is more than a conversation—it’s a call to action. For Black, Brown, and low-income families, programs like WIC and SNAP don’t just fill stomachs—they support futures.

Little WANDA’s mission is to make sure no kid grows up thinking struggle plates are normal. She’s here to serve up truth with turmeric, and justice with a jollof beat.

🏛️ She's Headed to Capitol Hill

This week, Little WANDA takes her message to Washington. Tambra Raye Stevenson, MPH, MA, her creator and the founder of WANDA: Women Advancing Nutrition, Dietetics, and Agriculture, will speak to lawmakers about the urgent need to protect and expand food as medicine programs for maternal and child health.

“I created Little WANDA because every child deserves to see a hero who looks like them fighting for their right to be healthy, happy, and heard,” says Tambra.“She carries the stories of our communities—and the solutions. As a mom, my hope is that Little WANDA becomes the spark that lights a fire in the next generation to fight for food justice, with joy and purpose.”
